The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre perched high on Langdon cliffs is the home of Dover Coastguard, part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The Coastguard Officers, on duty there, are responsible for coastal search and rescue from Reculver, near Herne Bay right round to Beachy Head in Sussex. They can call on many resources including RNLI lifeboats, RAF helicopters and Coastguard Rescue Teams. The centre is also responsible for the Channel Navigation Information System which is aimed at preventing collisions in the channel. Fundamental to this is the Traffic Separation Scheme which has divided the channel into traffic lanes similar to a motorway.

The futuristic looking building was originally built in the late 1970s and has since been enlarged. It been constructed on the top of two WWII gun emplacements. Beneath the building are still the remains of the emplacements, storage rooms and a tunnel.
