Stuart was appointed as Dover Coxswain in Autumn 2007. Prior to moving to Dover with his wife and three children, he had been, since 2001, a full time helmsman at Tower Lifeboat Station on the River Thames. Lifeboating is very much in his blood as his father, William, was Coxswain of the Dungeness Lifeboat from 1977 until 1997. Stuart joined his father's crew when he was seventeen and eventually became Second Coxswain. He has a huge amount of experience at sea having been a fisherman operating his own boats from Dungeness and Rye. Stuart was awarded his Long Service Badge in 2009.
